Project: 2020 UTS Library
Program: University Library
Location: UTS main campus, NSW
Year: 2008 semester 2
People: Euckan Chan
Info:
The conceptual idea for the UTS library was to retained the experience of a traditional library, where you experience the journey to search for a book through shelves, instead of completely rely on the new automatic shelving system. It is this “book searching pilgrimage” that has generates the dynamic form of the “ramp” building that will bring visitors from the ground level right up to the top level of the building or vice versa. Pockets of learning common is merged with the ramp and faces the central atrium of the building to receive maximum daylight for the working section, while book shelves becomes the acoustic barrier between the book finder and the student/academic operating in these pockets. The locations of these pockets are also opposite to one another separate through the atrium which gives a transparency between students from different faculty the way they usually work in their own environment and atmosphere.
